SNUFF, n.1, v.1 Also altered or emphatic forms snoof (Abd. 1900 J. Milne Poems 50), snouff (Edb. 1828 D. M. Moir Mansie Wauch x.). Sc. forms and usages of Eng. snuff, a, to sniff. Deriv. snuffy in comb. snuffy-guffer, an eel (Fif. 1958). Cf. Guffer, n. Phs. derived from the eel's habit of swimming with quick movements of the head suggestive of a dog sniffing.
