SOCK, n.3 Any garment made of wool; orig. a sock in the process of being knitted and hence any piece of knitting (Sh. 1971).Sh. 1960 New Shetlander No. 54. 27:
It was explained that jumpers, scarves, haps, berets, and gloves, etc., were all "socks." What happened when one's "sock" was a sock, I couldn't imagine.
