SOORAVOOLIC, n. One who cadges for food or drink, a sponger, one who courts a girl for her dowry, a “chancer” (Arg. 1936 L. McInnes S. Kintyre 12). [surə′vulək]Arg. 1932:
For guidsake gie that sooravoolic a dram an' no hae him hingin aboot the place half the nicht. . . . Him! he's naethin but a sooravoolic: he's efter the lass for her siller.

[Presumably from Gael. suiridhe, wooing, courting, + bolg, a bag, wallet, belly, but the precise formation and sense are uncertain.]
