SPLAE, adj. Also ¶splee (Sc. 1911 S.D.D.); splaw-; splaivie-, splayvie-. Sc. variants of Eng. splay(-foot(ed)) (Gall. 1824 MacTaggart Gallov. Encycl. 435; s.Sc. 1837 Wilson's Tales of the Borders IV. 33; Kcb. 1897 A. J. Armstrong R. Rankine at Exhibition 27, splaw-; Rxb. 1912 Jedburgh Gaz. (19 July); Sc. 1933 W. Souter Seeds in the Wind 17; Dmb. 1971, splaivie).

[The form splaw is also found in 18th-c. Eng. and in mod. dial. Splaivie is due to conflation with skaivie s.v. Skave, adj., or spavy (see Spavie).]
