Betty was what is called in Scotland, or in that part of it to which she belonged “splash-footed”, that is, when she walked nearly the whole inner side of the foot was presented forward.

Sandy's feet were very large, and terribly ‘splayed!' But large as were the ‘splash feet,' they proved too much for us.
