SURTOUT, n. A centre-piece for a table, a large piece of plate containing condiments, fruit, flowers, etc., set in the middle of a dining-table, an épergne. Obs.Sc. 1747 Caled. Mercury (13 July):
Eight Dozen plain and three Dozen gilt Plates. A complete Surtout. Two large Turins with Covers.
