†SWEAP, v., n. Also sweep. [swip]
I. v. To strike, beat, whip, flog (Sc. 1710 T. Ruddiman Gl. to Douglas Aeneis s.v. swipper; Cai. 1904 E.D.D., sweep).
II. n. A stroke, a blow (Bnff. 1825 Jam.).
[The evidence for Mod. Sc. is somewhat dubious, and II. may be rather a variant of Swap, n.1 For I. cf. Mid.Eng. swepe, a or to scourge, O.E. swipu, a whip.]
