TEMBA, n. A state of tension, alertness, watchfulness (Sh. 1914 Angus Gl.); esp. in phrs.: 1. to be upo(n) temba, (1) to be on the alert or on the tiptoe of expectation (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl., 1908 Jak. (1928), Sh. 1972); (2) to be in a dangerous position (Sh. 1908 Jak. (1928)); 2. to sit or stand on (upon) temba, to wait anxiously, to be on one's guard (Sh. 1908 Jak. (1928), Sh. 1972).
