TENANTS-DAY, n. comb. Also Tannansday. The name of a fair day and holiday in the town of Beith in Ayrshire (Ayr. 1845 Stat. Acc.2 V. 577, Ayr. 1972), held on 18th August, Old Style.Rnf. 1845 Stat. Acc.2 VII. 113:
A fair is held annually, on the 30th of August, which is called Tannansday.
Ayr. 1933 G. A. F. Knight Archaeol. Light II. 299:
St Inan's Day, now called “Tenant's Day” was held on 18th August, on the Cuffhill, near St Inan's Chair.

[A corruption of Saint Inan's Day, from the name of a 9th c. Celtic saint.]
