[Of somewhat uncertain formation, from Norw. u-, neg. pref. (= Eng. un-) + the root bat- meaning improvement, advantage (Eng. bett-er), as in Unbatnafoo. There may have been a conflation between Norw. dial. batelaus, useless, unprofitable, disadvantageous, and ubateleg, id.]
