UNDERMOOR, n. Also onder mör. The second or under layer of peat in a peat bank (Sh. 1973). See Muir, n., 4. [′ʊndərmør]Sh. 1904 E.D.D.:
If the moss is deep two persons cut — the one below the other. The one that cuts on the top is said to cast da upper mör; the other cuts or casts the under mör, i.e. the under or lower moor.
Sh. 1964 Folk Life II. 5:
The hardest work in peat-casting was cleaning undermoors. This was necessary when new banks were being opened on old peat moor that had already had two or three depths of peat removed, leaving more underneath.
