UNGASTO, n. Also ungastö (Sh. 1910 Old-Lore Misc. III. I. 41), ungastu; ongastø (Jak.). A strong head wind; contrary wind (Sh. 1908 Jak. (1928), 1914 Angus Gl., Sh. 1973). [′ʌŋgəstø]Sh. 1892 Manson's Sh. Almanac:
We'll hae an ungastu afore sin-risin.

[Orig. somewhat uncertain, poss. from an attrib. use with vindur, wind, of Icel. andstæður or phs. gagnstæður, contrary, opposite, but the phonology is not clear.]
