WARRIOR, n. Also -iour. Sc. usages:
1. Used jocularly or affectionately of a lively, spirited, stout-hearted person, often of a child, “a game chicken”, freq. in phr. a great warrior. Gen.Sc.Edb. 1712 W. Mitchel Third Addition of the Tincklar's Religion 1:

Re Third Lanark's nickname. My uncle was President of the Third Lanark Shareholders' Association for many years and from what I was told as a boy the team was originally formed from the 3rd Lanarkshire division of an army regiment based in Glasgow, and were certainly called "The Warriors" before becoming known as "Hi-Hi." Third Lanark had this title, presumably because of their association with the Cameronians. Stenhousemuir still have this title, although I am unsure why. Sc. 2004 Press and Journal 10 Aug 26:
