WATH, n. A ford. Also obs. in Eng. exc. dial. Poss. in quot. below a borrowing from Cmb. dial.Dmf. 1795 Stat. Acc.1 II. 15:
The Solway Firth, or Booness Wath, as it is called.

[O.N. vað, a ford. Booness is Bowness in Cumberland. Solway is gen. taken to represent *Súlavað, “pillars-ford” (O.N. súl + vað). O.Sc. Scotiswath, Sulwath, a.1384.]
