YORK, n. In pl.: leather straps or cords bound round trouser legs below the knee, as worn by carters, ploughmen or others engaged in dusty or muddy work (Dmf. 1958). Cf. Nickie-tam, n.3m.Sc. 1973 Scots. Mag. (Aug.) 431:
The legs were either pushed into the boot-tops or held with cord or leather straps called “yorks.”
