BASH, v.2 intr. To be abashed or confused.Ayr. 1787 Burns To the Guidwife of Wauchope-House (Cent. ed.) iii.:
I firèd, inspirèd, At ev'ry kindling keek, But, bashing and dashing, I fearèd ay to speak.

[Aphetic form of abash. O.Fr. esbair through ppl. stem esbaiss-, Mod.Fr. ébahir, from Lat. ex and O.Fr. *bair, *bahir, from It. baïre = cry bah, hence astound. The latest quot. in the N.E.D. is 1610.]
