BOGSHAIVELT, Bogjavled, Bowjavled, adj. “Distorted, knocked out of shape” (Bnff.2 1935). [bɔg′ʃe:vlt, bɔg′dʒe:vlt, bʌu′dʒe:vlt]Abd. 1914 T.S.D.C. I. 23:
The cysicle lamp's a' bogshaivelt. Also bogjavled, bowjavled.
Abd. 1926 A correspondent from Garioch in Bnffsh. Jnl. (25 May) 2:
In describing a man to-day, I found myself using the expression “bog-shaivelt among the legs.” . . . In bog-shaivelt it [bog] is, according to our Garioch use, an intensive prefix — rather badly shaivelt.

[Phs. from bog-, ablaut form of O.E. būgan, to bend + Shevel, q.v., to distort. Bow [bʌu] is a regular Sc. development of bog (see P.L.D. § 66.2).]
