BOLE, n.2 “A stopper (usually of wood) with which the ‘smoke-man' closed up the aperture through which he lit the sulphur when smoking hosiery” (w.Rxb. 1923 Watson W.-B.).

[Perhaps from Bole, n.1, 2, an aperture, the word being extended to the shutter which closes the hole and then to anything that stops it up; or from bole, the stem of a tree, extended to anything cylindrical. See N.E.D., bole1, b.]
