CHEWS, n.pl. “Middling sized pieces of coal” (Sc. 1886 J. Barrowman Sc. Mining Terms 17; Slg.3 1939). Also found in Nhb. dial. in form chous (E.D.D.). Also in comb. chew-coals. [tʃu:z]w.Lth.1795 Stat. Acc.1 XVIII. 437:
A great many of the chew-coals, are carried by the contract shipping to the London market, at 6s per ton.
