CUM-, pref. Appar. a form of cam-, pref., in Camshachle, Camsheugh, Camstairy, etc., q.v., derived from the Gael. cam, crooked. In some cases this orig. meaning remains in the pref.; in others the force is merely intensive, e.g. in Cumsleesh, Cumsloosh. The common intensive pref. com-, from Lat. cum, with, may also have influenced the development of the Sc. cum-. See further under Cur-, pref.
