DIP, n. Melted fat in which potatoes are dipped to make them more palatable (Bnff.2, Ags.2 1940; Per. 1915 Wilson L. Strathearn 244; Fif.13, Edb.1 1940).

Hence tatties an' dip(py), a meal of potatoes eaten in this way (Abd.19 c.1885, — dippy; Ags.6 1916; Ags.17 1940); cf. tatties an' dab s.v. Dab, v.1, n.1, III. 3.Rxb. 1924 Kelso Chron. (24 Oct.) 2/ 8:
Tatties an' milk — tatties and dippy — it was a mael itsel'.
