DOON, DOONS, adv.2 Also doun(s), dunze. Very, extremely. Gen. used after a neg. Also used adj. in phr. in doun sooth, really, truly.n.Sc. 1808 Jam.:
Nae that dunze meikle, not very much.
Fif. 1827 W. Tennant Papistry Storm'd 67:
He bangit up sae doons affrichtet.
Hdg. 1892 J. Lumsden Sheep-Head 293:
Ye'll hae been biddin' 'ersel na to the wadin', Mr Pintail — in doun sooth, hae ye? Answer strecht na!
Peb. 1715 A. Pennecuik Descr. of Twd. 106:
Frae time the clerk once knew the Caice, He was not thence so doons severe.
wm.Sc. 1868 Laird of Logan 340:
John, however, wasna sae doon proud, but went on his way, bundle and a', rejoicing.
Ayr. 1821 Edb. Mag. (April) 352:
I am doons wae to let my pen fa' without tuilyiein' you a wee for the auld-farrant letter whilk ye sent me.

[An extended meaning of Doon, adv.1 (cf. Eng. downright), with phs. some semantic influence from O.Sc. done (see note to Dune, adv.). The forms with terminal [z] may have originated in wrong division before adjs. beginning with s or on analogy with anes, whiles, etc. Cf. Dooms.]
