[The word has been borrowed from n.Eng. dial. Of uncertain origin. Phs. from an unrecorded O.N. *foga, *føgja, Sw. foga, Dan. foie, cogn. with Ger.fügen, with the gen. meaning of “to fit, accommodate oneself.” But the phonology is obscure.]
