FITIN, n. Also fitan (ne.Sc. 1881 W. Gregor Folk-Lore 82), fittin (ne.Sc. 1880–4 F. Day Fishes I. 291), fiten. [′fəitən]
1. The whiting, Gadus merlangus (ne.Sc. 1951).
2. The whitethroat, Sylvia communis (Mry. 1895 Harvie-Brown and Buckley Fauna Mry. Basin I. 234); also applied to other birds of the same family, e.g. willow wren and sedge warbler (Abd. 1888 Trans. Bnff. Field Club 25).
