GATE PENNIE, n. comb. A levy or tax demanded from merchants and dealers on entering a market.Slg. 1718 Slg. Burgh Rec. (1889) 154:
Appoints the deacon . . . to produce and lay before the toun councill any rights they have for exacting the gate pennie and fourteen shilling Scots from each countrie cordiner for their being allowed to buy cows hydes in the mercat.
