GRIPPLE, adj. Also grippal. Grasping, mean, niggardly. Also in Eng. dial.Sc. 1808 Scott Marmion vi. Intro.:
While gripple owners still refuse To others what they cannot use.
Sc. 1814 Scott Waverley lxvii.:
Naebody wad be sae gripple as to tak his gear after they had gi'en him a pardon.

[O.Sc. has grippill, gripping, tenacious, 1513. Eng. (16th c.) has grip(p)le, etc., O.E. gripul, from root of Gripe.]
