HOOPS, int. An exclamation of encouragement to one to raise oneself or lift anything heavy. Gen.Sc. Also hoopse (up) (Abd. 1919 T.S.D.C. III.; Ayr.4 1928) and hoopadosy (Ork. 1929 Marw.). [hups, ′hupsi, hupə′dosi]Cai. 1919 T.S.D.C. III. 20:
A father lifting up his child would say "Hoopse up."

[An emphatic alteration of up. Cf. colloq. Eng. upsadaisy, id.]
