LAVELLAN, n. Also live(e)llan. The water-shrew, Neomys fodiens (Cai. 1887 Harvie-Brown and Buckley Fauna Cai. 248, 1907 County of Cai. (Horne) 77, Cai. 1960), though in some of the features ascribed to it the creature is rather mythical than real. [lə′vɛlən]Cai. 1771 T. Pennant Tour 1769 150:
I enquired here after the Lavellan, which, from description, I suspect to be the Water Shrew-mouse.
