†MUM, adj. Irreg. Sc. variant of Eng. numb, found only in derivs. mummed, mummit, mum't, benumbed, stupefied with cold; of the hands: tingling as a result of renewed circulation after extreme cold. Also mumt-like, appearing stupefied with cold (Lth. 1825 Jam.); mumness, numbness, lack of feeling or stupor of a part of the body (Id.).Bwk. 1825 Jam.:
Mumm'd. Used to denote that disagreeable sensation which one has in the hands, when one warms them too quickly after being very cold.
