I. n. 1. Refuse, esp. the refuse of weed seeds, etc., produced in winnowing, rubbish (Sh. 1908 Jak. (1928)).Sh. 1909 Old-Lore Misc. II. ii. 79:
When corn is being cleaned by fanning with a “weight”, preparatory to grinding, refuse, such as broken straw, etc., gathers at one side of the weight, and is picked off and thrown away. This refuse is called rüed.

2. Rubbishy talk, nonsense, rambling discourse (Sh. 1908 Jak. (1928), Sh. 1968). Rarely in pl.Sh. 1897 Shetland News (11 Dec.):

II. v. 1. To remove (broken straw, weed seeds, etc.) in winnowing (Sh. 1968).Sh. 1894 Williamson MSS. (7 May):

2. tr. and intr. To talk (nonsense), to babble, to rave (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl., Sh. 1968). Ppl.adj. rüdin, deriv. rüdie, inclined to ramble incoherently in speech, garrulous, also used subst., one who tells tall stories, a romancer (Sh. 1968).Sh. 1897 Shetland News (16 Oct.):
