WANEARTHLIE, adj. Also -y, -erthly, -yirthlie; -ertly (I.Sc. 1973). Sc. forms of Eng. unearthly, ghostly, supernatural (n.Sc. 1825 Jam., -earthly, s.v. unearthly, Sc. 1825 Jam., -ie); transcendental. Also adv. Only in liter. usage.Sc. 1803 Scott Minstrelsy III. 361:
My lichts are seen to blaze at een, With wull wanerthly gleam.
Sc. 1818 Scots Mag. (Sept.) 155:
We ne'er luit on that we saw her, though ony body wad, in a moment, hae seen that it was something wanearthlie.
Sc. 1913 H. P. Cameron Imit. Christ iii. xxii.:
A' we bruik athoot or athin, naitirlie or wanyirthlie.
