BUCHANAN. After Francis Hamilton Buchanan (1762–1829), of Callander, botanist and zoologist in Calcutta. Derivs. Buchanania, in Bot. a genus of tropical terebinths, order Anacardiaceae (1798 W. Roxburgh Plants Coromandel III. 79); buchanani(i), specif. name of various Eastern Indian fishes, e.g. Panchax, Catla, Pangasius, Rohita (1840–46 Cuvier & Valenciennes Hist. Nat. des Poissons XV. 45, XVII. 411, XVIII. 383), birds and reptiles.
