BUTEA. Bot. A genus of East Indian shrubs of the bean family, called after John Stuart (1713–92), third Earl of Bute and Prime Minister, a noted amateur botanist, by W. Roxburgh (Plants of Coromandel (1795) I. 21). See also Stuartia.
