[?: F. haut pays in some such sense as ‘higher or more inland district’, and thus perh. = Land-wyn(e n., suggests itself, but there is no record of the F. phrase as applied to wines in the F. dictionaries.] The name of a variety of wine (perh. that of its district of origin) and its standard of measure. —1553 Edinb.
