Lind, Lynd(e, n. Also: leynd. [ME. and e.m.E. lynde. ME., e.m.E. and OE. linde, lind. (Cf. Line n.3).]Chiefly, but not invariably, rhyming with words which had ind in OE.: cf. note to Kind n.
Properly, the linden or lime tree.Chiefly or only in verse, and used there, as also in ME … as a vague term for trees generally: in various verse-formulæ or tags, as (as) licht as (leif of) (the) lynd (ME., a 1310), and under (the) lynd (ME., c 1314) = in woodland. in the open, also undir wod lynd.(1) a1500 Gol. & Gaw. 289.
