Pater-noster, n. [ME. (1150–75), e.m.E. and OE. pater noster (freq. written as one word), L. pater noster ‘our Father’, the opening words of the Lord's Prayer. Cf. OF. pater- (11th c.), patre- (12th c.), later patenostre, mod. F. patenôtre.] The Lord's Prayer, esp. in the Latin version; a recitation of this, also in plur.Also comb. in Pater-noster-space, the time taken to say a Paternoster.Also as the opening words of the prayer.(1) a1400 Leg.
