Pavis, -es, -ice, n. Also: paw- and -ys, -eis; plur. pavesis, pavises, paves, -eis. [ME. and e.m.E. payvese (a 1400), paves (c 1400), -eys, -ice, -ys(se (15th c.), pauish (a 1548), etc., OF. pavais, -eis (1337 in Hatz.-Darm.; mod. F. pavois), med. L. pavesis, -(i)us, -(i)um, etc., appar. f. Pavia, the Italian place-name.]
1. A pavis, a large shield used to protect the body against arrows, etc.; any large shield. b. Chiefly, One of a row of such shields set up along the side of a ship as a defence against missiles.(1) 1494 Loutfut MS. 131 a.
