Pest, n. Also: peist; best(e. [F. peste (1539 in Hatz.-Darm.), L. pestis plague, contagious disease. Cf. e.m.E. pest, in imprecation (1553), plague (1603, in pest-cart), bane (1621).] Pest, in the usual senses.In early use, appar. only Sc.
