Propitiatorie, Propiciatorie, n. and adj. [e.m.E. and ME propiciatori (Cursor M.), -ie, -y, propitiatorie (1561) n. = the mercy seat (a1300), a propitiation (1561), adj. = that propitiates (1551); late L. propitiātōrium place of atonement, propitiation, subst. use of neut. sing. of late L. propitiātōrius atoning (whence the adj. use). So OF propiciatorie (a1200 in Littré), mod. F. propitiatoire Propitiatore adj.] a. noun. Only in Nisbet, after Purvey. The covering of the Jewish Ark of the Covenant, the mercy-seat. b. adj.
