Rin-rufe, Renrouf(e, Runruff(e, n. Also: ryn-, rinn-, rane- and -ruif(f, -ruiffe. [Late north. ME rynrofe a ‘partition roof’ (1423–4 in Account Rolls of Durham in Trans. Phil. Soc. (1925)); Rin v.1 and Ruf(e n.1] a. A roof or canopy extending or projecting from an outside or inside wall; a lean-to; a dormer roof. b. The continuous part of a roof, as opposed to a ‘flanker’ or side projection.There is some ambiguity between a and b, and some quots. may be wrongly assigned.a. 1506 Glasgow Dioc. Reg. II 152.
