Stemming, Stamyn(g, n. Also: stemmyng, -ying, -yne, -ene, -ein, steming, -yng, -en, -eme, stemeing, stemnyn, staming, -eine, stoemeing, stenning, -yng, stenyng, -yne, stenneyn, steinyng, stannyng, -yne, staining. [ME and e.m.E. stamin (Ancr. R.), stamyn (Chaucer) a coarse garment; stamyn (Prompt. Parv.), stamen (1495), stamyng (north., 1553), stamine (1594) woollen or worsted cloth, OF estamine (1155 in Larousse), late L. staminea, L. stamina.] A woollen cloth suitable for the manufacture, esp., of hose, also, various other garments, and used as a furnishing fabric. b. pl. c. attrib.(1) ?1438 Alex. ii 6783.
