[ME and e.m.E. tavernyer (Ayenbite), tauerner (Wyclif), tauarnere (14th c.), taberner, tawyrner (both 15th c.), tavernar (1530), tavernour (1603), AF taverner, OF tavernier, L. tabernārius a shopkeeper.] An innkeeper. Also wine tavernar. Also attrib.In early use as a surname. 1361 Reg. Episc. Morav. 306.
