Tolerance, n. Also: tollera(u)nce, -ans, -ence. [Late ME and e.m.E. tolleraunce (Lydgate), tolerance (1603), MF tolérance, L. tolerāntia.] Permission or licence given, sometimes appar. by tacit agreement, by a person or authority to another who has no formal right to the thing allowed; the enjoyment of a privilege, etc. due to the forbearance or consent of another.
