Vacand, Vakand(e, Va(i)king, Vacant, (ppl.) adj. Also: wacand(e, vacan(e, vaccand, -ant, waccand, -ant, waquant, vaucant, vaicand, vecand, wakand(e, wakwand, vaikand, waikand, vackand, vak(e)ing, vai(c)king, waiking, vacking(e, vackeing. [ME and e.m.E. vacaunt (c1290), vacauns (1297), vacant (Manning), OF vacant, L. vacans, vacantem, pres. ppl. of vacāre to be empty; Vak(e v.] a. Of an (ecclesiastical, etc.) position or office: Unfilled. (Vak(e v. 1 a.) b. Of a possession, etc.: Undisposed or unassigned. (Vak(e v. 1 b.) c. Of a church service: Lacking a celebrant. (Vak(e v. 1 c.) d. Of a kingdom or throne: Having no king or heir. (Vak(e v. d, cf. Vacance n. 1 c.) e. Of a court of law: In recess, not sitting. (Vak(e v. 1 f, cf. Vacance n. 2.) f.
