[e.m.E. and ME. hack-, hakney, etc., ME. hakeney, hakene, hakenai (13 … ), OF. haquenée, ‘an ambling horse or mare, especially for ladies to ride on’, of obscure origin.] A hackney, a horse used for ordinary riding; sometimes, an ambling horse.(a) 1473 Reg.
