Patent, a.2 (adv.) Also: patt- and -ant. [e.m.E. patent (1486), -ente, north. paytent (1508), L. patens, also F. patent.Before the 17th c. chiefly Sc.]
1. Of a door or other means of ingress: Not shut; unobstructed; that can be passed through. Also fig.predic. a1500 Bk. Chess 1881.
