A lease, usually or always on easy terms, formalised by entering the name of the lessee in the rental book of the proprietor or leasing authority.Also as the second element of a compound in few rental.See also Rental(l)er n.Conditions on which such a lease was granted varied from one estate to another. At first perh. rentals were set with no definite ish, but came in some estates to be virtually equivalent to a liferent lease. In others rental lease was extendable to two successive lives and so could be regarded as heritable.‘When a rentaller … was enrolled in the landlord's rental book, he was given a copy of the entry to keep as his title, to be produced in defence of his possession if need be. … Rentalling was, in fact, a system of inheritance subject to renewal which preserved continuity of possession in a family.’ Margaret H.
