ASTRICTION, n. (See quot. from Green's Encycl. Law Scot.)Sc. 1711 in Nairne Peerage Evidence (1873) 138:
Reservand alwayes to the said John lord Murray and to his heirs male and of tailzie contained in his rights and infeftments of the estate of Athole and their successors and assigneys heretors of the lands and baronie of Huntingtour the astriction and thirlage with the multure sucken sequells knaveshyp and services used and wont of the saids lands.
Sc. 1909 Green's Encycl. Law Scot. I. 519:
The binding of lands to a mill under the prædial servitude . . . of thirlage, now almost in disuse. “To astrict” and “to thirl” are here synonymous terms; but “thirlage” is used to denote the general character of the obligation, while “astriction” is used to describe the constituting of the obligation in a particular case.
