BLACKING-GRASS, n. “A wild plant from which a black dye is extracted” (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl.). Also blackin' girse (Sh. 1975). The plant referred to is meadowsweet, Spiraea ulmaria. Sh. 1956 U. Venables Life in Shet. ix.:
Even in those days blackin' girse and yallowin' girse were already going out of favour.
