CHITTY, adj. Applied to the face: small, pinched, childish. Also chit (Sc. 1816 Scott O. Mortality x.). Obs. except n.dial. in Eng.Sc. 1822 Scott F. Nigel xviii.:
She contented herself with asking her untimely visitor, “what she made so early with her pale, chitty face, in the streets of London?”

[Prob. of same origin as Chit, n.1, applied to anything small or undeveloped.]
